What starts with a few nurseries planted with avocado trees in 1982, now 37 years later, it is said that there are about 17.000 hectareas sown in departments such as Caldas, Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, Santander, Norte de Santander, Risaralda, among others.
It is assure that the avocado is the business because of the exponential growth that it has had over the time where it has not only evolved in terms of planted areas, but also the issue of exports has had a considerable increase.
At 2009, where the Colombian avocado exports had started they had sended a total of two containers and a half to the dutch market and nowadays, only 10 years after, this figure has exceeded in an impressive way coming to estimate a total exports of 56.700 tons of this fruit, what traduces to 78.000 million dollars.
This sector whose growth has significantly favored the country, because we found how many families now lives from the avocado, the women has been linked to the work and the favorable development of the avocado trees has been recognized in a large part of the areas of the country generating high productivities.
It is important to mention that the development of the industry in the country has attracted foreign investment, where we find out how in our land they are over 6.000 hectareas purchased by Mexican, Chilean and Peruvian investors to grow avocado.
As we find out great opportunities in the country for the fruit grow, there are also a lot of challenges, where the main one is to be in a business that becomes competitive and sustainable in the long- term.
The construction of the two aspects requires of specific efforts as the quality of the products aspect; the work in the origin certifications development, where the aim is to unify the avocado quality; it is necessary to make a special effort in the agricultural management, where thematic issues such as human development and human resources; likewise, a special emphasis must be placed on the promotion of the internal consumption of avocado.
It is timely to call small and large producers to commit to their work and the delivery of quality products, because it is not only to open a market and send a large number of containers, but it is necessary to make promotional strategies for the product in that country, for which it is necessary to invest money.
